Bruce almighty film review
There is definitely some low-brow comedy in the film that doesn't really fit with the importance of the film's meaning or the quality of the delivery, such as the dog reading the newspaper on the toilet and the whole monkey scene, but it was definitely pretty nice to see Ace Ventura's friend Spike make a cameo appearance.
One could argue that Bruce Nolan, Carrey's character, is not necessarily qualified to be an anchor, on the basis of two remote reports we see him delivering, one from the scene of a chocolate chip cookie of record-breaking size, the other from on board an anniversary cruise of the Maid of the Mist, the famous Niagara Falls tour boat.
Most of the prayers in this movie are "petitionary," meaning that they are asking for something, usually love, money, or status-related.
Advertisement Now that may argue that he is a loose cannon and not fit to anchor anyway although he would be replacing a man whose primary skill seems to be smiling.

You get the feeling that even while he's giving Bruce the free ride, he has a hand on the wheel, like a drivers' training instructor. Someone stop this director from ever making another movie. Since Bruce is so dissatisfied with the job God is doing, God turns the controls of the universe over to him--or at least, the controls over his immediate neighborhood in Buffalo, although at one point these limited powers seem to extend directly above Buffalo to such an extent that Bruce is able to change the distance of the moon, causing tidal waves in Japan. He's desperate to obtain the job of head anchor at the TV station, but he loses his cool on live TV when he hears that the job went to his rival colleague. As with most God-bothering Hollywood movies, Jesus is notable by his absence. This movie doesn't just have holes, it has craters and canyons — yawning abysses into which even the most halfhearted attempts at credibility vanish. It teeters between happily deranged comedy and sentimental fable, but is unsatisfying in both categories. I'm reminded of the episode of Michael Moore's brilliant The Awful Truth, when they had a man lay down on the sidewalk and pretend to be dead and see who would actually stop and make sure he was okay. After that, there was no need to do more. There's a larger audience for this film than I can estimate, yet in the small world of satirical comedies with religion in their crosshairs, I can assume why studios aren't cranking out more of them, and I don't believe controversy is the prime reason. Recently, things haven't been going well for Bruce. Meanwhile, his constant excitement about his own life makes him more selfish, leaving his relationship on dangerous ground. Aniston, as a sweet kindergarten teacher and fiancee, shows again after " The Good Girl " that she really will have a movie career, despite the small-minded cavils of those who think she should have stayed on television. And, on one particularly bad day, in which he loses his job, is beaten up by thugs, and crashes his car, he snaps and launches a tirade at God, who promptly invites him to visit for a chat. Less almighty.

She can play comedy, which is not easy, and she can keep up with Carrey while not simply mirroring his zaniness; that's one of those gifts like being able to sing one song while typing the words to another.

The problem with playing God, the movie demonstrates, is that when such powers are entrusted to a human, short-term notions tend to be valued higher than long-term improvement plans. BlackX 19 December I really do not know what people have against this film, but it's definitely one of my favourites. And when Bruce tells God that he wants to solve the problems of world hunger and peace, God tells him that is a "Miss America answer" and His goal seems to be to get Bruce to think about what would make him happy with no regard for anyone but himself and the woman he loves. So, sanctimony with a side order of laughs, then? Even when he tries to help a homeless guy from being harassed by a bunch of hoodlums and of course they have to be Mexican, obviously , his good will towards his fellow man backfires. Freeman plays God with a quality of warm detachment that is just about right, I think. Is it OK to laugh about God, prayer, and spirituality? After an attempt at straight acting The Majestic , Jim Carrey is back to playing the clown. It teeters between happily deranged comedy and sentimental fable, but is unsatisfying in both categories.

What's the story? And it's really funny. Add your rating See all 63 kid reviews. Neither awful or guffaw-ful. There's Carrey's hyperactive tendencies, and just the obligatory fact that this story practically extracts every laugh and every tear there will be audiences, quite possibly those who are religious, but not enough to where they can't laugh at the form of satire with a premise that basically concocts this very anemic, tired tale of redemption and "putting yourself in the shoes of the person you criticize. What other kinds of prayers are there? At least, you don't think that when you see her. From the first few frames with Jim Carrey's character, I knew this endeavor may notBruce Almighty could very well be the one film where Jim Carrey gives everything he's got, making a character so over-the-top and goofy that it would go on to be one of his best performances. It's not preachy, it's not anchored by it's moral, it shouldn't be controversial. The gag of Bruce doing silly little things with his powers is amusing for about 60 seconds, then it loses its appeal. It has aspirations of melding comedy with drama.
But as a plot, it works well. Those films centered Adam Sandler and Eddie Murphy, respectively, in their madness, where this one victimizes Jim Carrey showing that he can be funny, if taken in smaller doses.
